The formula
Tiles = ceiling( Floor area / area of one tile )
Add wastage, normally 8 to 10%
Boxes = ceiling( Tiles / tiles per box )
Adhesive about 4 kg per square metre
Grout about 0.5 kg per square metre
What this assumes
- Wastage is taken as 8%. For diagonal laying or a room with many corners, use 12%.
- Buy full boxes. Shops rarely sell loose tiles from a box.
- Buy all tiles in one lot. Different batches have slight colour differences that show badly on a floor.
- Skirting is calculated separately if you include it.
- Adhesive quantity is for normal tile-on-screed work. Large format tiles need more.
Common questions
How many 2x2 tiles in 100 sq ft?
A 2x2 feet tile covers 4 sq ft, so 25 tiles. Add 8% wastage and buy 27. Since a box usually has 4 tiles, buy 7 boxes.
Why do I need extra tiles?
Tiles break during cutting and handling. You also want 4 or 5 spare tiles kept aside for future repairs. Finding a matching tile two years later is almost impossible.
Vitrified or ceramic?
Vitrified for floors. It absorbs less water, is harder and lasts longer. Ceramic is fine for walls, especially bathroom and kitchen, and costs less.
Should I compare tile price or laid price?
Laid price. Tile cost plus adhesive plus labour is the real number. A cheap tile that needs skilled labour and extra adhesive is not cheap.
